Installation Instructions for ADA Signage
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
The installation of ADA signage must adhere to the rules
and regulations as set out in part 36 Appendix A of the
Americans with Disabilities Act as revised 1994. The text
of the ADA 1994 revisions is quoted at the bottom of this
page.
Never install braille or tactile signage on doors. All
ADA signage should be mounted on the wall adjacent to
the latch side of a door.
ADA signage is mounted on the wall 60 inches from the
center of the sign to the finished floor. Never mount signs containing pictograms or braille on any
door. There have been numerous complaints and lawsuits
from the blind community where a person is reading the
braille on a sign and the door is opened from the other side
potentially causing injury.
Normal Installation
Where there is insufficient room on the wall adjacent to the
door latch, a sign containing braille or pictograms is
installed as follows:
Position the sign on the nearest adjacent wall to the door
latch. Ensure that the sign is located 60 inches from the
floor to the center of the sign. This should ensure that a
blind person will not be struck by the opening door if he or
she is standing 3 inches from the sign. Leave approximately
18 inches space between the sweep of the door and the
sign. Alternate Location
Where there is a window on the door latch side, the sign
can be installed on the glass if there is sufficient room,
otherwise mount the sign 60 inches from the floor to the
center of the sign directly beside the glass panel.
Mounting Tactile Signs on or Beside Windows
After deciding the appropriate location for mounting,
follow the instructions below; 1.Before removing the adhesive from the sign, measure
from the center of the sign to the finished floor. The
sign should be mounted 60 inches from the floor to the
center of the sign.
2. Once you have correctly measured the height of the
sign, use a pencil to mark the wall at the top of the
sign.
3.Carefully clean the surface of the wall thoroughly with
TSP or alcohol. Allow time for the surface to
completely dry.
4.Remove the liner from strips of adhesive on the back
of the sign.
5. Place the sign on the wall using the penciled line as
your guide.
6. Press the sign firmly into place.
Below is a copy of the ADA guidelines for installing braille
and tactile signs 1994, the enforceable current regulations.
The 2004 amendments have not yet been ratified and are
not in force therefore they should not be followed when
